India’s Lithium-Ion Battery Waste Challenge

An Open Call by Grameen Pragati Foundation & Mastek Foundation

As India accelerates its shift toward electric mobility and digital devices, lithium-ion batteries are powering progress across the country. But their disposal is emerging as a serious environmental and safety concern, especially in waste processing facilities.

To address this critical issue, Grameen Pragati Foundation (GPF) and Mastek Foundation have jointly launched this challenge, inviting students, startups, researchers, professionals, and innovators across India to submit bold ideas and practical solutions.

The Challenge

We are looking for affordable, implementable solutions that can be scaled across urban and semi-urban areas in India. Focus areas include:

Battery Detection in Waste

How can workers or systems easily detect lithium-ion batteries in incoming waste?

Facility & Worker Safety

What low-cost safety interventions can be introduced at material recovery facilities or informal recycling hubs?

Sustainable Recovery Methods

How can India develop cost-effective recycling techniques to extract lithium, cobalt, and other valuable elements?

Safe Battery Extraction

How can used batteries be removed from e-waste items safely—especially in small repair shops or kabadiwalas?

Fire Prevention & Response

Can we create quick-response tools or protocols to handle battery fires at scrap yards, landfills, or waste plants?

Design for India

How can we encourage battery and product designs that are safer to handle and easier to recycle in Indian conditions?

In Why This Matters for India

  • Battery fires are increasing in waste trucks, landfills, and recycling centres across Indian cities
  • Informal recyclers and workers are most at risk, often without protective gear or training.
  • India is a growing hub for EVs and gadgets—and must get ahead of the coming waste wave.

This challenge aims to catalyse local innovation that can improve safety, sustainability, and scalability.

Who Can Participate?

Open to individuals and teams from:

  • Engineering / design colleges
  • Startups in clean tech or e-waste
  • NGOs or community innovators
  • Professionals in the waste management or electronics sector

Whether you have a working prototype, idea on paper, or just a clever concept, we welcome your entry.
